Hi, I'm currently going through this with a cat I'm rescuing from Egypt. She will have to fly in the hold, and at London Heathrow she will stay in the HARC (Heathrow Animal Reception Centre) There she will stay in a climate controlled kennel and get her needs met (water, bathroom etc) You wont be able to pick her up from the HARC yourself, as only DEFRA approved couriers can pick up animals from there.

As DEFRA transport to Glasgow will be too expensive on your own (I'm sharing a pet taxi with several other rescues) You should try and get transport to a pet friendly hotel in london or straight to the train station. From there get the train up, either in a carrier or if you get a Caledonian Sleeper train, you can get a pet friendly room and let her roam around in that.

If you need any more advice, I recommend messaging "9 Lives Scotland-Cat Rescue without Borders" They have been in touch with me regarding my adoption as I, a fellow american, was also very confused by this whole process. Best of luck to both of us!
