I have done this with a cat and a small dog, didn't want them put in the hold so had to do the via Europe route.

First step is flying to Europe, there probably was some type of paperwork needed but nobody checked a thing when we got off the plane with 2 animals.

The issue is getting into the UK, there were 2 main routes, via the channel tunnel or a ferry from the Netherlands, I have done both.

The eurostar doesn't allow pets and don't have a car so needed to get a taxi to take us through, it wasn't insanely expensive (£135). On the ferry the pets just stay in a cage in a room and you get to watch them on a TV which was fairly horrifying since its jut sad dogs whining and barking.

Both routes suffer from the same problem, the UK is extremely strict about your pets vaccination status and nobody else gives a fuck. Both times after being very clear with the vets that we were traveling to the UK and needed their vaccination status filled in correctly we were denied boarding due to some minor error in the way the medication was recorded. This seemed to happen so often that both times we were sent to the nearby vet who was on call to give the vaccination again, recorded it correctly, sent to the usual hotel that seemed on call for this purpose and then allowed to travel again 24 hours later.

If you can have your own car for either the ferry or eurostar then its going to be much more comfortable for your cat, and honestly if I was doing it again I would just plan to stay at the border a day early and have their vet fill it in correctly, certainly do not make essential plans for the next day and expect issues at the border. Hope you have better luck than I have.
