Yeah, that's true. My first landlord when I moved to Glasgow from outside the UK didn't seem terrible, but was. When me and my flatmates had to sign the contract only two of us had to sign, I didn't sign because I was on holiday. Turns out the flat didn't have an HMO license and I couldn't get registered for anything - which really sucked because I was the only one planning to stay in the UK permanently. That landlord also dealt with all the bills (didn't know that was illegal either).

On the other hand, it is usually a lot cheaper. But since OP thinks £179 is "reasonably priced", I don't think they're too worried about that. I liked living where I lived, and I'd often have friends complain about living in student accommodation (noise, people having their heaters on all the time making their room too warm, lack of rules in the common areas). My place felt more like a home than student accommodation ever would, I think.
