I wasn’t accurate about the “20 or so years” thing - it’s called a Flame Supervision Device (FSD) and a quick google tells me it came in to effect for appliances fitted after July 2008 so yours isn’t necessarily ancient.
Definitely worth getting some detectors though if you can’t afford to replace it, and replacing seals is a DIY job
