How, though? You can't use "cut and cover" since some careless bastard put a city on top of the land in the last 130 years and the ground is notoriously bad for tunnelling.

The best approach IMO is to leave the Subway as is and build an overground light rail network. No more retrofitting old and crap infrastructure, just bite the bullet and build something that'll last the next hundred years.
