honestly, i feel like part of the issue is so much of glasgow city centre isn't nice to walk around. they've been shutting off roads to traffic which is great, but there's still so many streets where the traffic and road noise make it difficult to even hold a conversation with someone right next to you. combine that with really bad cycling infrastructure (poorly maintained and rarely enforced..... seriously if i had £1 for every car i seen parked in the howard street cycle lane, i'd have enough money to buy a forklift and move every car out the cycle lane myself) and it seems like a city that talks a big game about prioritizing walkable areas but really doesn't want to actually put the effort in.

it should also be said that many times, the rent on the high street (or shopping malls) is higher per sq ft than a space in a retail park. in the ideal world, landlords would lower the rent so smaller businesses would move in, but this doesn't happen. so you've got this catch 22 where big companies don't want to move into a high street store because they don't get enough for their money and small businesses who would likely be fine running a smaller shop can't afford it.
