in edinburgh nightclubs are only open till 5 during the festival or at new year. might be a couple of other special occasions. the alcohol-related opening hours are hard limits in scottish law.

in england they have had 24-hour licensing since i think 2005, before which the times were slightly more restrictive than what they are now in scotland - it was 11pm for pubs and 2am for nightclubs/late licence. now it's entirely at the discretion of the local council. and in practice most actual 24h licences have been given to the big tescos.

on the flipside, supermarkets and most shops in england are only allowed to open for 6 hours on sundays. threw me for a loop when i needed to buy something at 4:05pm on a sunday and couldn't.
