I think it may be to do with (and I know people will disagree on this) a different and weakened view of 'class structure' in Scotland in general and Glasgow in particular. People are far less willing to accept that somebody with more money or whatever is 'better' than them, and so people who *do* have those things expect and receive less deference than they get in, say, London. This results in people being prepared to interact with strangers on a more equal level rather than as them being Above, Below, or Competition socially. I've spoken with actual Lords and Ladies and plenty of homeless junkies, and people are willing to interact (for limited casual exchanges) without the barriers of class or pretence to a social position they aspire to.
