I think that cycling safely in the city comes down to 3 main things: experience, confidence and unfortunately a wee bit of luck.

The trick is to be assertive, make your position on the road clear, i.e. don’t feel that you need to pull in to the side if it’s not safe to do so, ignore the pricks who think they own the road and if in any doubt at all always assume that another driver hasn’t see you.
