Do you have a start / end point and parts that you are uncomfortable with? Maryhill / Seewoo / Centre / West end have some really good if not very obvious traffic free routes so it might be a matter of finding a better route. Cycling without traffic is calmer than in traffic regardless of how confident you are.

Run red lights if there is 100% no safety issue in doing so and it gets you out of traffic faster, taking off at green lights with impatient drivers behind or next to you is not the safest position to be in, pedestrians go first but once they are clear I go (I suspect this might not be popular). Also don't be a "pick me" cyclist and call other people entitled for having a better understanding of public safety, if you want to wait thats fine.

Town also has plenty of 4 lane essentially motorways going through the middle of it, they are fairly relaxing to cycle on as there is plenty of space to overtake. Taxis can be aggressive overtakers but a lot of the worries about annoying motorists is just an internal worry, you will often end up going faster than traffic anyway. You will get used to it and as much as you hear people with horror stories about biking constantly, once you have been doing it long enough you will understand its actually relatively a very safe way to move around.
