Some of the more 'colourful' characters you might bump into in stores etc, may be interested in you due to your accent. This is not them trying to start some kind of grift (99%) they will mostly be genuinely interested in where you've come from and what you think of Glasgow. And people will not be offended in the least if you can't understand them at first - just ask them to use their 'Telephone Voice'.

Please don't mention how your distant ancestor was 14% 'scotch'. If you live here and intend staying here *you* are now 94.76% Scottish.
Humour (yes, that's humour with 2 'u's ) is *very* dry, sarcastic, and often self-deprecating. And if somebody makes a joke about you that is obviously exaggerated or ridiculous, it is a sign of inclusion and camaraderie, not mocking - and also an invitation for you to make a similar comment about them. |
