okay, so we stop subsidy, charge the off peak fare 24/7 and everyone gets a free puppy?
the government subsidies are to cover running the less profitable routes, bus companies get them too, in fact that's pretty much why some of the companies even exist these days, they only run the subsidies local routes. If the subsidies go away, either lower use routes need to go away, or fares need to go UP to cover the cost of running those routes. and the fare increase would be across the board, after all, raising fares exponentially on an already low use route isn't gonna increase passenger numbers, is it?

I'm not sure there is a solution that'd make everyone happy with the public transport system. People in low use areas need the subsidies to keep their buses running, people who only travel at peak time feel they're being ripped off, people don't like old trains, people complain at the waste of money buying new trains (yes, i'vre heard people complain about the waste of money on my train route, we have the new electric trains here) people complain about the service frequency, wanting more trains... I honestly expect, if the trains were 100% free to use, covered by tax, with comfortable, frequent, clean new trains, people would complain about the colour
