I have taken a train in all of those countries, except Norway (I plan to) and they have the benefit of not having the track owned by one for profit company, the trains owned by another, the stations owned in some cases by another, and the trains operated by another. That's how they can charge what they charge and have a more reliable service
service reliability (other than the staff shortage issue, that's a Scotrail thing) isn't actually down to Scotrail most of the time, points or signal failures aren't in any way the responsibility of Scotrail, that'd be Network Rail.
I'm pretty sure, if the fares dropped, many of these routes would suffer greatly, but I'm happy to be proved wrong.
And, as for paying 4000+ per year to get to my job, I pay not a huge amount off that, I have done for quite some time, it sucks, but I could save money by moving nearer work...
