See I would agree with that on basis that it is what happens with accents generally, they're mish mash and people pick up things from elsewhere.

The reason I'm not fully agreeing is that I personally know people who have never lived outside Glasgow who have adopted this accent. Including a member of my own family who grew up alongside me in Pollok. Almost everyone I've personally known to have this accent either always had it and came from a more 'middle class' background, or they suddenly gained it when they went to uni.

Some people, I believe, view the Glasgow accent as a generalised sound, to be indicative of lower standing (lower class) and thus they distance themselves from it by adopting a twang whereby people might think they're one of the nice Scots from Edinburgh or similar.
