I’d recommend saving up and investing in good material if you do go down this route. And go for a neutral colour. Then you can use them for decades.

If you do make your own you could do a “practice” curtain first. I believe people who design and make their own clothes will sometimes make the dress out of muslin, or an equally cheap fabric, to see if it will work. It allows them to adjust patterns ,etc without wasting expensive fabric. Or they make the mock-up (think that’s the name given to the piece) to see if it will fit/suit them. Although doing a curtain like that would add a bit to the overall cost, the practice would be valuable and it’s a good way to make your learner mistakes without ruining the expensive fabric, so saving money and rage in the process.
