It does seem to be a thing that most tenements have mice. That being said, I have never seen one in my flat in the last 15 years and have only see two in the garden. I know from my neighbours that over the years a few mice have been seen. We do keep the close and garden clean and uncluttered. The bin store is at the back of the garden and we keep it clean too. So nothing to attract them more than anywhere else.

During lockdown my close got a whatsapp group going, which is why I know about the mice. A mattress had been put out the back for collection just before lockdown and hadn’t been picked up so we think that was a place they had nested. Managed to get it taken away. Ended up most of us got those plug-in sonic mouse deterrents after the mouse was seen. My sister (who lives in London) also told me to stick steel wool in any little gaps in skirting boards, etc as they can get through tiny places. Haven’t needed to do this as can’t find gaps.

Honestly any apartment type building will likely have mice in it somewhere, it’s just not obvious. Most people I know that have lived in tenements haven’t had big problems with them
