First time I properly cycled in Glasgow (other than when I was wee about my local street) was an attempt to go from the West End to the Southside about 8 years ago. I couldn't figure out where the cycle paths were for the most part and at one particuarly busy section it had the blue sign for shared use and I was cycling slowly over to the Jamaica street bridge. I got accosted by two drunk junkies and yelled at then had to cycle on the main road down Pollokshaws Road avoiding buses and cars and everything else that mental bit brings. I genuinely thought I might die. I will say it is sloooooow progress but Glasgow generally is much better these days - the dedicated cycle lanes and shared use streets are quite widespread in certain parts of town. I reguarly cycle from the Southside to the West End and out to Loch Lomond on a weekend and barely need to be on the road. Attitudes are slightly better too but there is definitely work to be done there (I felt more safe in London cycling than I've ever done in Glasgow, motorists here still are weird about sharing the road).
