I'm a renter in my 40s who is about to buy for the first time, without family help, but I have been saving for 15+ years with this in mind. Honestly, a lot of having savings is just luck -- luck in having parents who saved and passed on the habit, luck in getting the right job early on, luck in not having any catastrophes in your family that drain your savings. I guess my point is that even though technically I have "earned" it, I think a lot of it was just luck or privilege, even without any inheritances involved.
