I took the same approach, I am particularly lucky to have been on a fixed 24m tariff until next year, but know that the price rise will hit hard at that point, so I upped my direct debit to build a cushion for when the fixed price runs out.

I'm not sure if it is a wise idea, MSE seems to recommend claiming back credit from suppliers but not sure if that applies to my current situation.
