Buy a return ticket to Troon but get off in Irvine and walk to Troon, watch the seals in the harbour, treat yourself to the Wee Hurrie, train back. If you are not willing to walk that far, get off on Barassie instead. I also recommend the ferry to Dunoon, but it's been a while since I was there
