Been out of Glasgow for 8 years. It was too shop heavy to survive covid. SNP policies have compounded its decline. Plans of making a drug capitol with free hit-up places have hastened junkie (if that word offends you, hard luck) migration. All the smaller towns around Scotland are doing great now. Glasgow will come back, it’s just waiting for the big commercial property crash to reset the bubbling costs and last of the companies who don’t need offices getting with the program. It’s been through worse…on that subject…

Those of you saying Glasgow was better in the 90s are kidding yourselves. Glasgow was an utter hole in the 90s. Litter was way worse, crime was way higher, drug abuse out of control, city centre wasn’t safe, east end was the Wild West, knife crime rife, Thatcherite policies helped push people back into their local zones creating territorial and us-them mindsets of low trust. I worked youth work then, helped with the move of knife crime from criminal to health issue. Glasgow today is a cute puppy in comparison, even to an outsider like I’ve become.
