The Subway is a narrow-guage, shallow tunnel built using cut and cover in most places (i.e. they dug a big ditch, built a horseshoe of brick and backfilled with whatever shite was to hand. Because of that, it can't just be-bored to a wider tunnel and the existing just isn't practical for today's humans. Any additional loop would need to be a completely separate, standard gauge so you'd need to get off and rejoin the dinky wee original to go to the West End, Govan etc. Given that, you might as well go on the subsurface lines into Queen St or Central - they already exist, connect with the wider network and go through the City centre and beyond.
