It will likely be the common hogweed (which is a native plant and not dangerous) which is the one you've always seen about.

The giant variety used to only really be seen on some isolated river banks but the last couple of years its spread much wider. It doesn't look particularly normal or weedy it can be be metres tall. I think it's the sap from the stalk you have to avoid.
