As a point of curiosity, the modern city centre motorway corridor was never meant to carry the volume of long distance, regional traffic that it does today.

That was meant to be the job of the south flank motorway. Unbuilt in it's original form, but effectively what we have now with the M8 - M74 corridor.

The M8 running parallel to north street was meant only as a local expressway and feeder road. That's why it was only two lanes in each direction initially, and its profile relatively "skinny" for a motorway.

With the M74 connection in place, arguably we're in a position to make that the primary regional east-west route, and begin downgrading of the M8.
