>Gentrification is rife. south and Finnieston are a perfect example of this.

Is gentrification really the devil it’s made out to be?

So I’ve spent a lot of time in Finnieston in the last five and a bit years because I’ve worked there. On the other hand my grandparents grew up in Govan from the late 40’s to the early 60’s and had friends who lived in Finnieston so spent a fair bit of their youth there. And my dad, uncle and aunt have all lived and worked in and around the area. Through the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s.

From the stories my grandparents have told me of the Finnieston of old, it was a shitehole. They weren’t particularly complimentary of the place it was back in the day. And I mean Govan isn’t exactly the best place in the world is it?

Every day of the week, I’d rather have grown up with the Finnieston of today than the Finnieston of then.

>There’ll be no more characters in a few years as a lot of the reasons why we had characters is because people generally had deprived lives with a varied and interesting upbringing.

If losing “characters” means less poverty and deprivation with each passing generation then sign me the fuck up.
