Honest advice: if you're on a UKRI or esprc go fucking hard on expenses bois. Conference in Hawaii? Aye.
If you don't spend it, it gets absorbed back into the uni and someone else *will*.
Get laptops, iPads, good headphones, all sorts. I've done all those and encourage my students to do the same. Wellcome in particular can't move for money.
