The thing with most renewables is that they are inconsistent. So you either need massive over-provision (which costs), storage (which also costs, when it is technologically feasible), and backup generation (nuclear, gas, etc) which...err...costs.

It is certainly cheaper for the renewables generators, but we still haven't cracked grid storage at scale. Even then, we'll still be backup.
