There's some good discussion on the thread linked below regarding renewables in Scotland. Currently, (hydro) pumped storage seems to be the most viable solution for dealing with the variability of power generated from renewable sources like wind etc. AFAIA we already have a few of these pumped storage schemes in Scotland, e.g. Cruachan, but it looks like there's a lot more in the works that will vastly increase our capacity going forward.

IMO corporate greed, along with poor planning, regulation and government policy, is why we're seeing such large price increases, e.g. assuming [this article](https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/sep/24/how-uk-energy-policies-have-left-britain-exposed-to-winter-gas-price-hikes) is correct, in 2013 the Government made the decision to save £750 million over 10 years by closing the Rough storage facility which provided 70% of the UK gas storage capacity. I'm no expert, but considering such a large proportion of our electricity down south is generated from gas, then surely this decision was a ridiculously short sighted move on their part. I mean I understand that we need to diversify our energy sources whilst reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, but taking such a massive risk is outrageous, and it unfortunately appears that the public are paying the price for it yet again.
