We already have a large amount of hydro schemes in Scotland thanks in part to a little known Labour MP named [Tom Johnston and the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board](https://www.drax.com/power-generation/a-brief-history-of-scottish-hydropower/). During the 1950's and 1960's the related engineering challenges and achievements were nothing short of incredible and were probably on a scale that we'll never see in this country again.

If anyone's interested The Hydro Boys: Pioneers of Renewable Energy by Emma Watson is a great account of the early days of hydro power in Scotland.
