Just my 2p.

English lit degrees are helpful, but they certainly aren't a prerequisite. In fact, if someone wanted to become a writer, I wouldn't recommend they spend four years on an English literature course. Fundamentally, they (most? all? I graduated a while back so things might have changed) don't teach students to write. I know many woeful writers who studied English literature and many outstanding writers who didn't.

There are many other degrees (professional writing, creative writing, rhetoric, writing, journalism, etc.) that teach writing as a craft rather than the analysis of the end product.
