I can second Borron street. Can get a little busy but there is almost always a space.
Few years ago I use to park in at the National theatre of Scotland car park on the left hand side of the entrance ramp and had no issues. It was free and popular with easy access to the city centre via the path beside the canal. Not sure of the current situation
