I applied for a few Glasgow housing associations when I was in a shit living situation and got one in Govanhill within weeks. Can honestly say the community here is fantastic and the housing association flats are really nice and refurbed to a high standard. The HA plan the closes so that it’s super mixed (queer people, asian families, Roma families etc all in the one close) and I know pretty much all my neighbours and we all help each-other out. I’ve never felt part of a community before and Govanhill feels like one of the last places where that old-fashioned community spirit still exists. I wouldn’t live anywhere else and you have everything you need on your doorstep. It’s nice walking down the streets filled with small businesses from different cultures, all open, and Queens Park is brilliant. Of course there’s dodgy folks, like there is anywhere, but i genuinely feel safer and more comfortable here than I did when I lived in Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire. It’s also well known within the Roma community in other European countries as a wee safe haven for Roma people which I think is really impressive.
