The subway and busses are free for children under 5. I think the trains might be too, but I'm not 100% sure. I know they have a scheme where up to 4 children can travel for £1 when you buy an adult ticket. And in turn, those tickets also gain one child free entry into some good places such as Edinburgh Zoo. You can find more on that [here.](https://www.scotrail.co.uk/kids-go-free) There's also various rail and bus cards that exist for discount journeys if you plan to use one of those, although I would avoid busses if you don't have to use them due to reliability.

Most museums are free across Scotland, and there's plenty of nice parks with visiting (some have animals).

It's not weird if you don't drink, no one will care. Kids can go into some pubs - usually if they serve food it's no issue. Some pubs have licenses that specifically do not allow children.

My only real tip is that you should know it gets dark quite early in the middle of winter, and the sun rises late - Something to thing about when planning your day. In late December the worst will be sunrise as 08:47 and sunset at 15:42.
