There's hostels, Glasgow isn't as car dependent as America, most people use the trains or bus, I know people studying in Glasgow who live in Giffnock, erskine, paisley and Bishop briggs, also worth looking into clydebank and southside is a good move. Its also worth noting the bus is free for under 25s I think in Scotland you just have to apply.
