Listen, you gave it 5 years....that's more than enough time to see if things will change. Clearly they haven't, so you are doing the right thing and making yourself a priority. That's not giving up at all. Home is where the heart is - sounds cheesy I know, but you can't beat closing the door at night knowing you can relax without wee neds giving you grief. :)
