I've had a friend get put in hospital with "non-Covid flu" and they told her it's most likely a variant that isn't showing up on tests.

I think it's rare and maybe needs the right combo of test/strain/person but it's not unheard of that it could be Covid.

I also had a cold/sore throat for about a week before testing positive with my last bout, which felt like you describe - absolutely dying, couldn't get out of bed for two days, and onto week 3 of recovery and still feeling the effects.
