I did this for a year and, much like everybody else on this thread, absolutely hated it. My overall quality of life and mood dropped. In theory, you think 'Oh, its only 45 minutes away'. But in practice, once you factor in means of travel from home to Queen St and Waverly to work and back again, it quickly builds up - and that's assuming you're travelling in optimal conditions. I could see why people would get sick of getting up in the small hours and not getting home until 7 - 8pm. It's physically and mentally draining.

The final straw for me was when I got stuck on the train on the way to work due to a fault on the line for 3 hours. The following day I opted to go by car instead and got stuck in standstill traffic for 2.5 hours thanks to a crash at Harthill.
Employers weren't willing to let me work in Glasgow in spite of having the resources to do so, resulting in me finding a better job in Glasgow.

Somebody once told me that a survey was performed on 100 different 100 y/olds for life advice and the top piece of advice that came out of it was to try and live close to your workplace to minimise commuting. Thought that was really interesting. I bet all 100 of them did the GLA - EDI commute!
