Would it not be prudent to sort out your employment situation here prior to looking for apartments?

It's going to depend heavily on how much you earn and how much your partner earns. The university might be able to sort you guys out with student accommodation but it's very expensive compared to renting a flat.

The western central belt has the majority of Scotlands population and everything is interconnected.

Try looking for flats in places like Paisley, Renfrew, East Renfrewshire, Dumbarton. You're no more than about 40 minutes by bus from Glasgow max by bus usually and even less by train.

If you drive it may be worth checking the requirements to use your license in the UK and then take your car through the EuroTunnel or by ferry. That might make commuting from further afield easier if you have to get accommodation further than the areas I've mentioned.

Alternatively maybe you should stay where you are and your partner can come over. It's just under two hours to get from Glasgow or Edinburgh Airport to most countries on the coast of Europe so even if you two have to live apart for a while then its not exactly 'long distance' as you can get by plane to mainland Europe than travelling to England by train.
