Just as a wee follow up to the suggestion to give crit role and D20 a watch to get the basics.

I'm a big fan of Critical Role and D20 and absolutely recommend giving them a watch.

You will get some great examples of top class roleplay from them but it's probably not the best way to get the basics of the game as the DMs very deliberately put entertainment over "the rules". It makes for a great show but it'll probably teach you habits and home brewed rules that you might not see used at the table you end up playing on and just end up confusing you.

I hope your hunt for a game goes well and it looks like you've got some pretty good suggestions to get you going with finding a group.

In terms of just getting a bit of a headstart on how to play, it probably is worth having a look at the "handbooker helper" series that critical role did. Its basically just a short series of videos to explore the core mechanics of the game and will make the first time you sit down at a table a bit simpler:
