Hey! I got mine of eBay, it travelled well and has made some great brews but it took a while to get up and running.

I have a scoby you’re more that welcome to but here’s the thing: a couple of months ago I noticed that fruit flies had laid eggs on the scoby, and there were a couple maggots on it. They were very small but a maggot is a maggot I guess.

From r/kombucha, there was mixed info although it generally seemed that those who were telling me to chuck the whole thing out were mostly due to revulsion than anything else. The larvae can’t survive submerged in liquid so I’m quite confident that the brew itself is fine.

I sliced off the top of the pelicule (the scoby), washed it, and restarted the brew. It’s now brewing fine, and tastes fine, but I understand that many people would find that revolting.

So, yes you’re more that welcome to some of mine, but thought it would be polite to give you information about its history so you can make an informed decision yourself!

Otherwise, give eBay a go or try asking in your local groups on facebook
