We did pull together as a society I think, though it's easy to forget that having learned about the parties and fun that people at the top of the government continued to have. After the beginning, when we quickly began to understand that people had very different levels of risk of dying, a lot of people were staying home and distancing to prevent other people, strangers, from getting sick and dying, rather than themselves. Neighbours looked out for each other. If the whole thing had ended after a few months instead of dragging on for 2 years, we might even have come out of it in a better place than we started.

I agree with you that it feels no lessons have been learned. If it happened again we'd be worse off because I'm not sure many people would abide by a lockdown again.
