You can get him to go to the gp to Al to be referred for an autism diagnosis. There are therapies that can help him.

But has he always been like this? Including in childhood? Bad at social communication and interaction, and repetitive and restrictive interests?

What you’re describing could be signs of depression. Or it’s possible there is both (pretty common for adults with ASD to have depression. And he might get seen a bit faster for depression via nhs. Or could get him evaluated +/- treated for depression privately with the added bit of a psychiatrist/psychologist seeing him could give him advice on if full assessment for autism is worthwhile.
