I think what the previous person suggested is sound advice.

I am 37 now, and when I was around 18 I joined a proper running club. I was really good at long distance running. My aim was to do Marathons. My PR for 10km was around 40m, and that was not my best distance.

Anyway I started when I was around 18, when I was around 24 I started to have knee problems. Nothing really happened, it is just that my body was not perfectly aligned and prepared to run 40-60km a week. I went to a physio, bought prosthetic insoles and continued pushing (although my times dropped dramatically, I think my last measured 10km was 45m). A few years later when I was 30 or so, I started to have problems on my hip. I went to the GP, physio, MRI, just wear and tear, nothing I could do.

I am 37 now, and my body suffers from having tried to be a semi-pro runner. My legs are in constant pain, same with the hip and my back. I still run twice a week because I love it, but my times are terrible, and I even need to walk for portions of it. Not because I am tired but because my legs are in pain.

I remember listening to a podcast by a guy who is one of the top leading ACL surgeons. He said something like 90% of his customers are average runners with massive knee problems. He 100% adviced against running, especially if you are running over a hard surface (concrete, pavement, even more cross country paths are hard).

If you want to get fit and lose weight, the best sports are swimming, cyclcing, weight lifting, stuff like that. Running is not recommended.

I am not a doctor btw. Just someone who has had problems with running, and I hope to avoid others having them. I have many friends or people I know who are also "runners", and we all have the same problems. Sometimes when stretching I chat with another runner (who I dont know but just happens to be there) and the chat always evolves to knee/hip problems.
