Only had to use them once or twice.
Generally they take the shortest possible route between stops but will still take a lot longer than normal journey would using trains.
Additionally if you are on an awkward stop where the train is normally jam packed by the time it arrives at you then you may not even get on the bus if its full. Hasn't happened to me but heard others complain about it.
