Huh. I had no idea people had a problem with that. I cycle everyday for my commute, and I often do it on long stretches of straight road where I can go at a decent speed. I have excellent control of my bicycle, and stay vigilent and ready to grab the handles any second.
As for why, I didn't realise it but /u/josephanthony's explanation is spot on, it really is a uniquely pleasant sensation.

I hope I don't get downvoted for answering truthfully. In the city in France where I come from, a lot more people commute by bicycle everywhere and while not everybody does this, you will still routinely see people do this and people don't have a problem with it. This is why I was unaware of the hostility towards this behaviour.
