The thing about the signal strength on your phone is it's not showing you what you think it is.

In the old days of 2g when there was only phone calls it was simple. The bars related to the signal to make a call. The lower the more likely the call cut up

Now you have much more to think about and one 5 bar chart does not cut it, but put 3 or 4 different bars and no one understands it.

You could have a bar indicator that shows you are connected to the mast for voice / SMS
Then a next for data connectivity
Another for quality of that data connectivity
And another for speed.

That's 4 bar charts but phones only have 1. It's nothing to do with pubs in town secretary jamming your phone, why would they? It's city centre buildings with sold brick and masts that are on top not able to penetrate well when the masts are high up. The real reason is people don't want mini call antenna put inside buildings, on lap posts or in places they could make a difference.

Also the wavelength signal that carries data at best rates also can't penetrate walls easily to carry fast data where as 2g voice at 900Mhz can get into buildings but can't carry fast data.

I used to work for a mobile company who had an old sandstone building with basement rooms in a city. They put mini antenna in the office on the walls. Signal was great.
