I'm a non-driver so have a few.

Take the train out to Pitlochry and go up Ben Vrackie, or even just to the wee Loch a'Choire (summit can be challenging in winter).

Loads of options on the West Highland Line, say Tyndrum or Bridge of Orchy aren't too far but feel like you have reached wilderness whilst still having pubs about for food.

If heading to Loch Lomond I'd pass through Balloch and pick up the bus to Balmaha. A very pretty village, good pub, and then you can head up Conic Hill for the views (Tip, head trough Milton of Buchanan an up to take the West Highland Way, so you come up the less steep side of Conic Hill and then go down the steep way into town). Even just the first stretch of the West Highland Way from Milngavie through the country park is nice.

I've not done it myself but I'm told to Kilpatrick Hills are lovely and dead easy to get to.

Catch a train to Ardrossan and then the ferry to Arran, lovely walks to be had there, and the boat makes it a real adventure.

Slightly different vibe but you can go to Troon and walk to beach to Irvine, with Arran across the water.

If you want a quick jaunt on a chilly day, this is lovely and short and you can couple it with visiting the attractions in Stirling. [https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/fife-stirling/darn-walk.shtml](https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/fife-stirling/darn-walk.shtml).
