The design that won that competition was a spanner and it's a good thing it got canned.

We'd have ended up with a completely windswept gun-metal grey square, with next to no vegetation and a daft, over-engineered water feature, which would've made the place even less appealing to walk around, windy as it can be here.

Honestly, I know the council (as an entity, regardless of political leadership) gets flack for taking ages to do anything, and going through endless consultations, but that design was genuinely rank.

The new one looks extremely promising: more trees, more space reclaimed from the roads, a more orderly and less cluttered use of the central part of the square.
