I really dont think thats necessarily true. Theres lots of work that isn't av corporate for freelance engineers and there is often positions at theatres for technicians.

It's like any other industry, you need to graft to get the decent gigs but if you work hard and have an ear for it you can fairly easily make a "career" out of it without having to just do conference/awards baws.
