Comment | You make some very valid points about the curriculum and are pretty spot on. I would say composite classes are not necessarily a bad thing in Primary schools. In fact, they are capped at 25 so a child actually has more direct teaching time than those in a straight class of 33. Typically they happen because there aren't enough kids in a stage to make two full classes of 30ish so they might go with 1 class of 30 and one composite class with 15/10. In an ideal world you could run with two straight classes but most schools are physically capped by the rooms available.
In secondary schools these combined classes sound quite extreme and I am not sure I would enjoy being taught Higher English with others in the class doing a different subject, the course is difficult enough without additional distractions. Swinney needs to get a grip of reality. |
